I agree with Sabra on taking a middle ground, say with clothing, but with perfume, whereas once I used to save the more expensive for best/a dressed up night out, I've stopped doing that (or else they would just sit there for years lol). But yes, your post does bring back memories of growing up and clothes for Sunday best, the front/living room that was only really used when visitors came (and best china), my mums red lipstick that she only wore when 'going out'.

I made a fashion manifesto for this year and it includes wearing as many luxe fabrics as possible day to day. No saving for best. There's a little old lady who lives in a town near to me. She's in her 80s, still wearing high heels and smart clothes. She even put glitter hairspray in her hair. I've spoken to her a couple of times and she says "It's only money – you can't take it with you!" And she's so right. Good on her! x
