Erin Hanson poem What If I Fall?

So, will you fall…or fly?

There’s only one way to find out: JUMP!

To kick off the New Year I decided to take the leap into the unknown. I have no idea if my parachute will open or if I’ll fall to Earth with a bump. If I fall, my ego will certainly be bruised. But one thing I do know is that if you don’t try you can’t succeed….or fail. Wouldn’t you rather follow your dreams and fail than never try at all?

There are only so many “tomorrows.”

Because one day we’ll look up from our work computers, half blinded by the screen glaring and countless hours staring, and realise that tomorrow came and went…and life has passed us by. Because life is what happens whilst you’re making plans for the future.

NEWSFLASH: this is it.

This IS life. It’s not a rehearsal. Nobody is coming to rescue you. This thing is 100% your responsibility. YOUR life. You only get one shot. If yours isn’t looking how you want it to, change it. Try! Will you fall…fly…or sit on the bench looking up at the sky, watching others feel that adrenalin rush which only comes from taking risks? I know which option I’m choosing. Because nobody proudly remembers the day they sat on the bench.

I’m choosing life.

I’m jumping.

Oh my goodness. I worked in the same company (at one point, the same region!) as you, Sam. I’ve had the same thought process & handed my notice in after almost 5 years. I’m heading to Australia solo in June and besides a diploma to help enhance my CV for life post-retail, I don’t have a plan. I feel a little braver in this ‘freefall’ period for having seen your blog. I wish you lots of luck and adventure!

      Hi Felicity 👋🏼.
Wow, good for you, girlfriend! High five to that! 🙌🏻
I did a round-the-world trip several years ago and spent a month in Oz and I absolutely loved it – I’m betting you will too.
Solo travel takes cojones, but it’s also one of the most rewarding and exciting things you can do – you’ll meet so many amazing people and see breathtaking sights that will stay with you for a lifetime. When you step outside your comfort zone so many thrilling things happen. I’m so excited for you! And if all else fails, you can always get a job at L’Occitane in Australia, right? I know the Retail Director there and a few BMs if you need an intro. I’m sure you won’t be short of offers though!
All the best, thanks for commenting and keep in touch – I’d love to hear about your adventures. If you start your own blog, let me know!
Enjoy flying in 2018, Sam x

LOVE this ❤️ If is doesn’t scare you, it isn’t worth doing, right? After a battle with infertility and deciding enough was enough, 2017 was the year I reduced my hours down to 4 days a after 12 years in my job, part of a 21 year career. Then in August 2017 I handed my notice in, and left in December to pursue photography and whatever else takes my fancy. It’s scary but liberating all at the same time….the world is our oyster now, literally. So go live it and have a blast. Like you say, you only get one shot at it. Can’t wait to hear about your adventures. And see your pink hair 👍🏼

Hi Sally! I’ve only just seen this comment, so sorry for the late reply. Good for you for following your dreams – what an inspiration! As one of my friends said to me just today: “First we jump into the river, and afterwards we learn to swim.” If you don’t try, you’ll never know, eh? Oh, and the pink hair washed away after a week of swimming in the sea in Thailand. D’oh! I’ll have to do it again sometime. No dramas! All the best, Sam x
